The Saudi government has issued an order ahead of Ramadan prohibiting iftar meals on mosque premises because of hygiene concerns. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs underlined the need of avoiding conducting iftar projects inside mosques in order to preserve hygiene standards.
The Ministry’s letter highlighted that mosque leaders should designate appropriate locations in the courtyards for iftar meals without constructing temporary structures or tents. Furthermore, imams and muezzins were advised not to seek money contributions for iftar programs aimed at fasting people.
In addition to the restrictions stated, the use of cameras and photography on mosque premises is forbidden, and prayer broadcasting via any media platform, including internet, is warned against. Ramadan, which begins on March 10 and ends on April 9 this year, is an important time for Muslims worldwide.
